Ich bin so enttäuscht. In meinem Blog von gestern hatte ich in allen Einzelheiten berichtet, wie die nächsten zwei Tage meines Lebens aussehen sollten. Alles sollte so sein wie geplant. Meine Pläne schienen perfekt abgestimmt zu sein, schließlich war alles bereits vor Monaten geplant.
Wenn dieser Blog heute rauskommt, hab ich keinerlei Ahnung, wo ich mich gerade aufhalten werde. Ich hab den heutigen Blog so eingestellt, dass er automatisch erscheint und hoffe, dass ich zum Zeitpunkt des Blog-Updates schon über der Nordsee sein werde, aber während ich das hier schreibe, sitze ich noch immer im stark verschneiten Deutschland fest.
Ich stecke immer noch hier fest, da es gestern in Europa das erste richtige Schneetreiben dieses Jahr gab, was meine Pläne total durcheinander brachte. Das Einzige was ich heute wirklich berichten kann ist: ich verbrachte die letzte Nacht im Sheraton Flughafen-Hotel in Frankfurt.
Wir checkten noch im Flughafen Bremen ein. Kurz darauf sagte man uns, dass der Abflug 2 Stunden Verspätung hat

Ein Flugzeug steht bereit für den Abflug nach Amerika
Während dieser Blog gerade rauskommt, sitze ich am Flughafen in Bremen. Es ist 5 Uhr morgens östlicher US-Zeitzone, aber hier ist es 11 Uhr in der früh. In einer Stunde geht mein Flug, muss dann nochmals umsteigen und bin anschließend auf direktem Weg in die USA. Wenn alles gut läuft, liege ich gegen 10 Uhr abends östlicher US-Zeitzone in meinem Bett. Die Reihe von Auftritten in den letzten Wochen, inklusive dem Privat-Konzert von gestern abend, war unvergesslich. In den letzten zwei Monaten hatten wir nicht eine einzige Show, bei der es nicht so gut lief.
In diesen wirtschaftlich schlechten Zeiten sind Live-Shows ein echter Gewinn. Es bringt die Unterhaltungsindustrie und die Künstler wieder zurück zu ihren Wurzeln. Bei der CHIC Organization handeln wir frei nach dem Motto: "Wir spielen umsonst - wir werden nur für´s Reisen bezahlt". Aber nach meinem langen Reisetag heute, und vor meinem morgendlichen Spaziergang morgen, bekommt ihr wieder meinen täglichen Blog um 5 Uhr morgens EST (New York).

Heute war unser letzter Auftritt bei The Night of the Proms. Ich hab das Gefühl der vergangene Monat verging wie im Flug. Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht!
Die ganze Organisation war perfekt und jeder hatte das Gefühl ein Teil einer großen Familie zu sein. Wir haben sogar jeden Auftritt mit dem Song "We Are Family" beendet - einem Song, den Bernard Edwards und ich damals im Jahre 1978 für Sister Sledge geschrieben hatten. Wie schnell doch die Zeit vergeht!

Erstaunliche Gnade
Unterwegs auf einem Spaziergang zum Kölner Dom
Gestern hab ich mich zu einem ausgiebigen Spaziergang zur Spitze des Kölner Doms aufgemacht. Ein Besuch dieser wundervollen Kirche schien sehr verlockend, schließlich befindet sie sich in Sichtweite zu meinem Hotel in Köln. Sie ist eines der wenigen Gebäude, die den Zweiten Weltkrieg unbeschadet überstanden haben. Ein Anblick von erstaunlicher Gnade.
Gerade als ich mich auf den Weg machen wollte, fiel mir ein, dass ich noch ein wichtiges Telefonat mit Grace Jones vereinbart hatte. Ja genau, die berühmte Grace Jones. Die Königin des Avant-Garde Sounds und unsterbliche Stilikone.
Im Jahre 1977 änderte sie quasi mit einem Schlag mein Leben, als sie vergaß meinen Namen auf die Gästeliste des Studio 54 zu setzen, so dass die mir den Eintritt verweigerten und ich als Konsequenz davon meinen größten Hit "Le Freak," schrieb. Seitdem sind wir die besten Freunde und ich habe nie wieder jemanden kennengelernt, der annähernd so drauf ist wie Grace. Sie ist absolut einzigartig.
Nach dem Gespräch mit Grace, was immer wieder ein riesen Spaß ist, kam mir plötzlich in den Sinn, dass sie und ich eine der wenigen sind, die immer noch aktiv und am Leben sind. Dabei war der Tod fast schon unser ständiger Wegbegleiter. Wir beide haben schon viele gemeinsame Freunde verloren.
Aber solange ich noch am Leben bin, versuche ich soviel wie möglich auf die Beine zu stellen. Das neue Jahr soll das beste und produktivste Jahr meines Lebens werden. Wenn ich Glück habe und danach noch ein weiteres Jahr am Leben bin, dann wünsche ich mir, dass dieser Jahr sogar noch besser wird. Sollte ich mein Ziel erreichen, wäre das von erstaunlicher Gnade.

Heute hatten wir einen Auftritt in Luxembourg. CHIC spielte dort zum ersten Mal. Die Show war der Wahnsinn. Die ganze Stimmung war einfach elektrisierend.
Mitten in der Show kam es plötzlich zu einem totalen Stromausfall. Bald war klar, dass es die ganze Stadt betraf, und nicht nur unsere Konzertarena.
Aber die Leute blieben sehr gelassen, bis wir wieder Strom hatten, und die Show konnte ohne Probleme weitergehen. Diese Aufnahmen zeigen, es war einfach funky wie immer.

Am Tag meiner Krebsuntersuchung
Vor fast genau einem Jahr begann ich diesen täglichen Blog zu schreiben, um mein Leben kurz nach meiner Krebserkrankung besser in den Griff zu bekommen. Obwohl mein Leben sehr stressig ist, habe ich fast keinen Tag meines Blogs ausgelassen.
Ich mache mir immer Sorgen, wenn ich längere Zeit von bestimmten Personen, von denen ich weiß, dass es ihnen nicht allzu gut geht, keinerlei Nachricht erhalte. Von einigen Leuten, die mir sehr nahe stehen, habe ich schon länger nichts mehr gehört. Normalerweise kommunizieren wir über Emails oder über Twitter. Trotz der vielen Emails jeden Tag, fällt es mir schon auf, wenn ich von euch schon einige Zeit nichts mehr gehört habe.
Meldet euch einfach, damit ich weiß, dass es euch gut geht. Ganz egal in welchem körperlichen, mentalen oder geistigen Zustand ihr seid - sagt einfach kurz Hallo.

Heute bin ich für ein paar Stunden zurück in London. Für die Frühstücks-Sendung der BBC gebe ich ein kurzes Interview, um meine Memoiren "Le Freak" vorzustellen. Ich bleibe dort nur wenige Stunden, da ich heute Abend wieder bei den "Night of the Proms" in Dortmund auf der Bühne stehen muss.

Ein kurzer Blick zurück, als ich mit Ashford & Simpson auf der Bühne stand
Ich habe das Leben stets als ein Geschenk betrachtet, manchmal habe ich es sogar fast schon als selbstverständlich empfunden. Wegen zahlreicher Drogeneskapaden war ich bereits mehrmals klinisch tot, aber die Ärzte holten mich immer wieder zurück.
Vor etwa einem Jahr erkrankte ich an Krebs. Dies bewegte mich dazu, über mein Leben zu schreiben, schließlich schätze ich das Leben seitdem umso mehr.
Ich möchte eigentlich nicht in der Vergangenheit leben - aber es ist immer schön sich daran zurück zu erinnern. Mein Motto lautet: "Werfe im Guten ein Blick zurück, aber verharre nicht dabei!". Deswegen bezeichne ich das heute lediglich als einen kurzen Blick zurück.
